Goodbye Frostbite…Hello Winter FUN!

By Chloe Orlando

December 2008/January 2009

Ok, so you've finally come to terms with the fact that you'll have to wait at least six months to relive those glorious days of lounging on the beach in your flashy string bikinis, perfecting your evenly-bronzed tan, and hitting on super-cute lifeguards. In fact, you've probably actually started to enjoy the wonders of fall—the beautiful colored leaves, the crisp fresh air, pumpkin pie and apple cider, showing off all your favorite scarves…the list can go on and on. But as you've mostly likely started to notice, those breezy autumn days can't last forever. In fact, they are just about coming to an end. That's right, girls; it's that time of year again! The time to break out those heavy winter jackets and cute snow boots, say goodbye to fall, and… hello winter!

Yes, we know; it's tough living in Cambridge during the cold, winter months. Although snowball fights and ice-skating are a perfect way to embrace the season, there are times when we could all use a little break from the icy outdoors and indulge in some fun and relaxing indoor activities. That's why we've provided you with twelve great ways to celebrate the holiday season indoors! From baking to slumber parties to connecting with your artistic side, we have an awesome list of things to do for all you Freeze girls out there—let the fun begin!

1. Bake. Make your favorite holiday goodies and give them away as gifts!

  • To find your favorite recipes: search online, buy a cookbook for expert dessert ideas, or call your parents to find out the ingredients in your most loved delicacies from back home!
  • Reenact your elementary school days and make a gingerbread house (Just be sure you don't eat all the candy and frosting beforehand)!
  • 2. Make a photo collage, scrapbook, or organize your photos into cute albums.

  • Whether it's for your best friend, boyfriend, sister, or just yourself, a collection of photos is a great gift and lots of fun to make.
  • Be creative! Make each page in your scrapbook have a unique theme, and spend time decorating. For a photo album, buy sequins and other fun accessories to make your album memorable!
  • 3. Learn something new! Pick up a new hobby you've always been meaning to try.

  • Sewing? Knitting? Playing a new instrument? Learning a new language? Pick something you've never done before and get a friend to teach you! If you're really feeling ambitious, sign up for classes.
  • 4. Read a book.

  • Sick of reading your orgo textbook? So are we! Instead, grab a fiction novel and indulge yourself in relaxation!
  • 5. Have a fashion show with your girlfriends. Come on girl, work it!

  • Who doesn't love to dress up? Grab your girls and your hottest outfits and dress yourselves up as sexy movie stars.
  • Do this on a Friday or Saturday night, and you'll be all ready to party after the show!
  • Make sure to take lots of pictures!
  • 6. Have a slumber party. Who said college girls can't have sleepovers?!

  • Pillow fights, manicures and pedicures, truth or dare, gossiping till 4 am about cute boys...endless amounts of fun! Flash back to your middle school days and have a rockin' slumber party with your favorite gals!
  • 7. Break out your artistic side.

  • Whether you enjoy painting, drawing, or making clay sculptures, pick a creative activity and show off your artsy side!
  • 8. Board games, anyone?

  • Oh, come on! Whoever said board games were only for nerds clearly never played Clue or Guess Who? Plus, board games are a lot more fun and engaging than staring at a television screen for hours on end.
  • The next time that cute boy invites you over for a movie, suggest a board game instead. This way, you two can learn a little something about each other!
  • 9. Decorate your room for the holidays. It's never too early to start celebrating!

  • Whichever holiday you celebrate, show some spirit!
  • Christmas lights, Hanukkah decorations, ribbons and bows, sparkle and glitter…it's time you give your room a holiday makeover!
  • For all you girls celebrating Christmas—if you really want to go all-out, splurge and buy a mini Christmas tree for your room. You'll be the envy of all your neighbors!
  • 10. Have a movie-thon.

  • Grab your closest friends and spend all day and night watching your all-time favorite movies!
  • Make sure to have plenty of popcorn and candy handy!
  • 11. Write holiday cards to family and friends!

  • Send your loved ones homemade cards to put them in the holiday spirit!
  • Be sure to spend time individualizing them, and make your decorations extra-cute!
  • 12. Reorganize your room. Donate anything you don't need!

  • Who doesn't love a clean and organized room? Empty out your closet and consider donating any clothes or other items to organizations such as The Salvation Army. Share the holiday spirit with those less fortunate than you!
